This design puts a new twist on a traditional plan, all within a footprint suitable for a shallow lot. Though flanked by formal living and dining rooms, the foyer is open, airy, and light, as today's homeowners expect. The living room, also vaulted, is a cozy space, with a fireplace and built-in shelves for books and treasures. A butler's pantry links the dining room to the island kitchen, whose layout encourages flow among the family gathering spaces at the back of the home while providing plenty of work and storage space. Bedrooms are all on the second level, at the top of a staircase tucked to the side of the plan for privacy.
